Nae Melanin (New York Artist)
In my first freestyle challenge for Straight To The Music, this young lady came in and held her own. At 17 years old she was able to put together a solid freestyle which moved her on as a finalist. I was thoroughly impressed as most contestants were mid to late 20’s and 30’s and she even out rapped some of the guys.
Although she’s still learning, that kind of willingness to just put yourself out there and go for it, is admired and can’t be taught. The potential for her is there and because she is young it gives her time to really develop herself. I like where she is headed and the future is bright.

Walk us through your background- Tell us more about you and your music
I’m from Far Rockaway, Queens. Born & Raised . I moved from Queens to Brooklyn back to Queens then to Manhattan, where I currently reside . I grew up living with my Mom & little sister. My Older Male cousins & Uncles acted as father figures. My Great - Grandmother played a significant role in my life , more so as being a 2nd mother. My music represents who I am as a person , what I been through , how I feel about certain things, and what I want my future to look like . I express myself through my music & use it as an escape to vent. I have different personalities which shows through the different styles of music I write . My music is overall a perspective of me.
What inspires you?
Wanting more for my sister & little cousins , as well as myself inspires me the most . Being someone that they look up to and hold in high esteem, keeps me pushing & aiming for better. They love my music, always push me to write and take it serious. That’s why I make sure most of my songs they can relate to, or they can jam to. My music isn’t just about me, it’s about how I make others feel. The experiences & obstacles I’ve been through inspire me as well.
What are some of the obstacles you've faced and how has it made you better?
Some obstacles I’ve faced in life were family issues , deaths of loved ones , & poverty. These obstacles built me in to who I am today. They’ve made me stronger, smarter, wiser, & more educated .
What do you think makes your music different from other artist?
